Our Kenyan coffees have arrived in Barcelona in perfect conditions and we have already delivered most of the pre-booked orders to our European roasters. The exceptional quality of the different lots makes us very satisfied and now is the time to focus on the next origin.
The recent coffee harvest in Burundi and Rwanda concluded at the end of July, directing in the yearly challenge of selecting our next partner and origin. While the cup quality is paramount, we recognize that other critical factors influence this decision. To minimize any external biases, we rely on a meticulous process of blind analysis and cupping.
This year, we received over 100 samples from these regions, and our lab team in Budapest played a crucial role in ensuring a fair evaluation. By separating the samples, our cuppers were kept in the dark about each coffee's origin, lot, and producer. The only distinctions made were based on processing methods: washed, natural, and anaerobic.
Focus on Origin: Burundi
Burundi, a nation often characterized by stark contrasts, is a land of immense beauty and profound challenges. Despite its status as one of the world's poorest countries, Burundi offers a unique terroir for coffee cultivation, with its high-altitude mountains and rich soils. However, this potential is often hindered by a lack of resources—particularly fertilizers—which hampers the full expression of the region's coffee quality.
The political landscape in Burundi remains tumultuous, marked by inefficiency and corruption. This instability has a direct impact on the coffee industry, where eager farmers struggle against the odds to produce specialty coffee.
Focus on Origin: Rwanda
Rwanda, often called the "Land of a Thousand Hills," shares a similar story of hope amidst hardship. The country has made significant strides in rebuilding its coffee sector following the devastating genocide of 1994. Today, Rwandan coffee is celebrated for its bright acidity, fruity flavours, and clean profiles—testaments to the country's recovery and commitment to quality.
Like Burundi, Rwanda's coffee production is challenged by logistical hurdles and limited access to resources. Nevertheless, the determination of Rwandan farmers and the growing support from international partners have led to remarkable improvements in both quality and consistency.
